Historical Heritage

Dhaka’s story stretches back to the first millennium, reaching prominence in the Mughal era when it became a provincial capital and global trade center. Known then as Jahangirnagar, the city thrived as the hub of the Bengal muslin trade, attracting merchants from across Eurasia.

During the Mughal and British periods, Dhaka earned the name “Venice of the East”, celebrated for its gardens, mosques, palaces, and riverine beauty. The city later flourished as an administrative and educational center under British India, and in 1971, after the Liberation War, it became the capital of independent Bangladesh.

In 2008, Dhaka proudly marked 400 years as a municipal city, celebrating centuries of cultural endurance and transformation.

Modern Dhaka

Today, Dhaka is a beta-global city — a powerhouse of political, economic, and cultural life in Bangladesh.

It is home to the Government of Bangladesh, Dhaka Stock Exchange, and numerous global organizations including BIMSTEC and CIRDAP.

The city contributes nearly 35% of Bangladesh’s economy and stands as one of the most industrialized and diverse regions in the nation. With over 50 diplomatic missions, Dhaka connects Bangladesh to the world through trade, culture, and diplomacy.

Dhaka’s skyline symbolizes ambition, while its streets pulse with energy — from tech startups to timeless bazaars, the city represents the true rhythm of Bangladesh.
